Farewell Bobby Bowden... I Will Hate You Always | The Sports Report Girl

Farewell, Bobby… I Will Hate You Always!

I’ve been in hate with Bobby Bowden since I was old enough to hate. In fact, he may have been my very first hate.

I’ve always hated everything about him. I hated that stupid smirk he wore. I hated his stupid Alabama drawl. I hated the way he waddled across the field. I hated how he always called female reporters “sweetie,” as if it were still 1952 and he was expecting whatever bimbo was interviewing him to go fetch him a hot towel after they finished. I hated that ugly leather jacket he wore for years when he was trying to be hip. I hate that stupid swamp hat he still wears whether it’s raining or not. I hate the fact that he’s an 80-year-old man who still goes by Bobby. But more than anything, I hate that stupid, self-assailing, belly-shaking laugh. I can still hear it now, “Eh-heh-heh-hee!”

I’ve hated Bobby Bowden since the moment I saw his fat, pompous, garnet-and-gold-clad carcass take to the sidelines at Florida State. He is the only person that I have ever wished death upon. No one in any sport has made my skin crawl or my blood curdle like Bobby, and that’s why I will miss him so very much.

I grew up a Gator fan in the 1990s rivalry of the Gators and Seminoles, a rivalry and decade that has not been, and probably never will be, equaled in terms of talent and stakes between two rivals. In the ‘90s Florida and Florida State combined for 14 conference titles, three national championships and two Heisman trophy winners. One or both teams were ranked in the top 10 every single year and each game was life and death. They even played each other twice in bowl games and once for the national championship.

The Florida-Florida State rivalry wasn’t just great because of the hate each team had for the other, or the national championship implications… it was great because of the characters involved. When Bowden took over the program at Florida State in 1967, he made it his own. When we look back at Florida State and Bobby Bowden’s legacy – the 388 career wins, the two national championships, the 14-straight seasons of 10 or more wins, the unprecedented 14 straight seasons in the top 5 of the AP College Football Poll – what we’ll remember more than the victories is the man.

I have never hated anyone more than I hate Bobby Bowden and there is no one I am more sad to see leave the game. You will be truly missed, Bobby.

Eh-heh-heh-hee!

  1. Wow says:

Came across this while doing Google research for a project.

I’m not a fan of Bowden myself, but this article is spiteful, juvenile, and disgraceful. Wishing death upon another human over FOOTBALL? Really? That says a lot more about you than it does about him.

I’ll pray for you, seeing as how you certainly need it.
